10 Steps For Effective Detoxing

THE TRUTH ABOUT DETOX

The word “detox” is the umbrella term used to describe many different types or approaches to detoxification. Many of them are disciplined fasting programs that can add additional stress for the body and can often deprive the body of essential nutrients needed for optimal health.

The truth is, detox is not a diet of lemon juice, cayenne pepper and B grade maple syrup – the human body needs much more than that to revitalise and restore cells back to optimum health.

One of the major problems with detoxing is the lack of protein people can miss out on. For instance, protein is a vital nutrient needed on a daily basis. It’s needed for balancing hormones, assisting in weight loss, supporting detoxification and digestion, and supporting a healthy immune system. Protein is also the key nutrient that helps you get ageless glowing skin and lean toned muscles. When your body doesn’t get enough protein needed for all these processes, it will source it from muscle tissue, which can lead to loss of muscle mass.

THE BEST WAY TO DETOX

I prefer a gentle and nurturing approach to detoxing that is well supported through fresh wholefoods. That way, I know that I’m nourishing and revitalising my body, not depriving it.

  

The best way to detox is basically through a healthy eating and lifestyle plan that’s rich in life giving vegetables and salads. It also means taking care of your digestion, getting adequate sleep and moving more.

 

Read on for my 10 steps to help detoxify, alkalise and heal the body:

1. EAT MORE GREENS

Green salads, smoothies or smoothie bowls are a great way to get your salad greens when detoxing. They're power-packed with naturally occurring nutrients including chlorophyll, beta carotene, vitamin C, B complex vitamins, amino acids, calcium, potassium and magnesium.


Green veggies work as a natural anti-inflammatory in the body and are a key nutrient in supporting digestive health and detoxification in the body.

 

2. SWAP COFFEE FOR MATCHA TEA

Ceremonial Grade Matcha Tea is the finest grade of green tea available. It’s a potent superfood powder obtained by gently milling green tea leaves into a pure fine powder. I love to start my day with ¼ teaspoon of  Ceremonial Grade Matcha Green Tea with hot water because studies have shown Matcha has the ability to boost your immunity, control your stress and assist in gentle weight loss!

3. SNACK ON NUTS + SEEDS

Nuts and seeds are high in fibre, minerals, healthy fats and protein. Just one handful will satisfy your hunger and keep blood sugars stable for hours - and can prevent unwanted visits to the snacking aisle or eating “healthy” protein or muesli bars that are typically filled with sugar, additives and preservatives that prevent your body from detoxifying effectively.

4. HAVE A WHEATGRASS SHOT

Wheatgrass juice is one of the most nutritionally dense greens on earth. Power-packed with natural whole food nutrients, it naturally supports detoxification pathways, digestion and skin vitality, to have you bursting with energy and glowing from the inside out. All you need to do for your daily dose is to add 1 teaspoon of wheatgrass powder into 1 glass cold filtered water + a splash of fresh lemon juice. Shake to mix well and enjoy straight away. You can also stir wheatgrass into fresh green juices and smoothies for an extra detoxifying boost.

5. DITCH THE ALCOHOL 

Alcohol contains many unwanted calories and can lead to digestive issues and cause inflammation in the body. An alcohol free period of just 1-2 weeks is often all you need to kick-start your detox or weight loss plan and reminds you that you do not necessarily need a drink every Friday or for comfort when you’ve just had a stressful day.

6. GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP 

Getting adequate sleep is as valuable as my Matcha green tea morning fix.  Not getting enough sleep means our bodies can’t repair and recover optimally, and our ability to function also becomes affected. In fact, research shows that people who don’t get enough sleep have a greater risk of developing metabolic syndrome (also known as syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome), which can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease. If you find it hard to unwind at the end of the day, you might want to drink a tea with calming and sedative properties such as Healthy Chef Relax + Renew tea to help promote better sleep.

7. EAT ENOUGH PROTEIN

 

Protein is an essential nutrient to help your body recover, repair and detox effectively.

 

Increasing protein intake can also help support high stress levels by stabilising any blood sugar spikes, reducing mood swings, jitteriness and improving sleep. It can also support proper hormone production that is essential to your overall wellbeing. I often have a glass of almond milk mixed with a little Healthy Chef protein and a handful of berries. It’s the perfect blend of protein, antioxidants, and healthy fats.

8. MOVE MORE

You don’t need to buy a gym membership or new runners to reboot your fitness routine. I simply like to take a good power walk every morning or during lunch. It makes me feel so good at the end of the day. I also have a pilates reformer machine for when I feel like getting a good strengthening and core workout. Moving more is crucial for an effective detox as it speeds up digestion, increases blood flow to all of your organs, and stimulates the muscles in the GI tract. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day to also help support fat loss and metabolism for optimal health and wellbeing.

9. BOOST YOUR DIGESTION 

The secret to improving how your body processes and eliminates waste is all in your digestive system. Unbalanced gut flora can have a detrimental impact your brain health, leading to issues like anxiety, depression, IBS and skin disorders. I regularly make my sauerkraut and enjoy other fermented vegetables such as kimchi or home made yoghurts to help nourish and restore beneficial bacteria in my gut.

 

Supporting your digestive health is probably one of the most important things you can do for effective detoxing.

 

10. DRINK WATER 

Drink at least 8-10 cups of pure water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Dehydration is a chronic problem for most people. Drinking plenty of pure water is especially important for people increasing their exercise routine, since significant amounts of fluid can be lost during exercise. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime to the water. Water will help your lymphatic and digestive systems moving properly and will  also assist in preventing gas, bloating and diarrhoea.
