The best protein powder for a sensitive stomach is usually an isolate, whey or pea, with a short ingredient list and no added gums, sugar alcohols, fibres or artificial sweeteners. like our organic pea protein. If you avoid dairy, a vegan pea protein isolate is the simplest choice. The protein itself is rarely the whole story. What usually matters is the type of protein, how much lactose it contains and what's been added to it.
I created my first protein powder, Pure Native WPI, because I couldn't find one without the additives that left me feeling uncomfortable. Here's what I look for, and how to choose between whey and vegan protein if your stomach is sensitive. - Teresa Cutter
What makes a protein powder easier on the stomach?
Isolate vs concentrate
Protein concentrates keep more of the original food's fat and carbohydrate. In whey concentrate, that includes more lactose. Isolates go through extra filtering, so they're higher in protein and lower in everything else. Whey protein isolate is typically at least 90% protein. Pea protein isolate has most of the starch and fibre from the pea removed.

Lactose
Lactose is the natural sugar in milk, and it's one of the most common reasons dairy-based protein shakes don't sit well. Whey isolate contains negligible lactose. Plant proteins contain none.
What's been added
Many protein powders include thickeners, bulking agents and sweeteners to improve texture and taste. These are often what makes the difference for a sensitive stomach, so read the ingredient list before the protein claim on the front.
Ingredients to check if you have a sensitive stomach
| Ingredient | Why it matters | Look for instead |
|---|---|---|
| Whey protein concentrate, milk solids, skim milk powder | More lactose than an isolate | Whey protein isolate, or a plant protein |
| Sugar alcohols (sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, maltitol) | Polyols are a FODMAP group and can cause wind and loose stools in larger amounts | Stevia or monk fruit, or an unsweetened powder |
| Inulin, chicory root, added fibres | Fermentable fibres that some people find hard to tolerate | A powder without added fibre |
| Gums and thickeners (xanthan, guar) | Added for texture, and some people prefer to avoid them | A short, simple ingredient list |
| Maltodextrin and dextrins | Cheap fillers that add carbohydrate, not protein | A powder that lists protein first and little else |
| Artificial sweeteners (sucralose, acesulfame K) | Many people prefer to avoid them | Natural sweeteners or an unflavoured option |

Whey protein for a sensitive stomach
If dairy agrees with you in small amounts, whey protein isolate is a good place to start. It's a complete protein with all nine essential amino acids, and it gives you the most protein per scoop.
Our Pure Native Whey Protein Isolate is made from grass-fed whey and has negligible lactose. The Natural flavour contains just whey protein isolate and sunflower lecithin, with nothing else added. Each serve gives you 24 to 26g of protein, depending on the flavour, and Vanilla has 1.5g of carbohydrate per 30g serve.

Whey isolate still contains milk protein, so it isn't suitable if you have a milk allergy.
Whey isolate vs hydrolysed whey
Hydrolysed whey has been partly broken down into smaller pieces of protein during processing. It's often more expensive and can taste more bitter. For most people, a clean whey isolate with a short ingredient list is enough.
Vegan protein for a sensitive stomach
f you avoid dairy or eat a plant-based diet, the most common vegan protein powders are made from pea, brown rice, hemp, soy or a blend. A few things to keep in mind:
- Single-source proteins make it easier to work out what suits you. Blends with many ingredients add more variables.
- Hemp protein is higher in fibre, which some people find heavier.
- Pea protein isolate is smooth, mild in flavour and a complete plant protein.
Is pea protein hard to digest?
Whole peas contain fermentable carbohydrates. Pea protein isolate has most of the pea's carbohydrate removed during processing, which is why an isolate can be independently certified for people following a low FODMAP diet.
What is the best vegan protein powder for a sensitive stomach?
Look for a pea protein isolate with no gums, sugar alcohols or added fibres, ideally with independent low FODMAP certification. Our Organic Pea Protein is made from certified organic golden peas grown in Canada. The Natural and Vanilla flavours are FODMAP Friendly certified, and Natural is 100% organic pea protein isolate with nothing added. Each serve gives you 20 to 23g of protein, and the range is rated 4.8 out of 5 from more than 1,400 reviews.

Best Protein Powder for a Sensitive Stomach FAQs
What protein powder is easiest on the stomach?
A protein isolate with a short ingredient list is usually the easiest place to start. Choose whey isolate if you tolerate small amounts of dairy, or pea protein isolate if you avoid dairy. Skip powders with sugar alcohols, inulin or gums.
Is whey isolate OK if I'm sensitive to lactose?
Whey isolate contains negligible lactose, so it can suit people who only need to limit lactose. It still contains milk protein, so it isn't suitable for a milk allergy. If you're unsure, start with half a serve or choose a plant protein.
Are there low FODMAP protein powder
Yes. Look for products certified by FODMAP Friendly or Monash University. The Healthy Chef Organic Pea Protein Natural and Vanilla are FODMAP Friendly certified, which means they've been lab tested and meet the program's low FODMAP criteria at the stated serve.
Why do some dietitians say no to protein powder?
Most dietitians recommend getting protein from food first, and some protein powders contain fillers, sweeteners or contaminants. A clean, tested protein powder can still be a convenient way to top up your protein alongside a balanced diet. Our Pure Native WPI and Organic Pea Protein are both tested for heavy metals.
