What are functional drinks?

A functional drink is a beverage made with an ingredient added for a purpose beyond taste and hydration, such as protein, collagen, probiotics, electrolytes or botanicals. In Australia, functional drinks range from ready-to-drink cans like kombucha and prebiotic sodas to powders you mix at home. Our range is all powders: you choose the strength, there's less packaging, and one tub makes 18 to 70 drinks.

How to choose a functional drink

  1. Check the functional ingredient and how much is in a serve. "Contains collagen" means more when the label says how many grams.
  2. Read the sugar and sweeteners. Many ready-to-drink options add sugar. Ours use monk fruit, Manuka honey or no sweetener at all.
  3. Know the caffeine. Matcha and coffee drinks contain caffeine. Rooibos chai and savoury broths don't.
  4. Match it to your diet. Look for gluten free, dairy free or plant-based if they matter to you.
  5. Read the warnings. Some functional drinks aren't suitable for children or during pregnancy. Check the label before you buy.
  6. Pick a drink you'll enjoy every day. A morning matcha or an evening chai is easier to keep up than a drink you don't like the taste of.

How to make our functional drinks

Whisk 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Matcha Tea into 70°C water or milk. Stir 2 teaspoons of Collagen Coffee into 250ml of hot or cold water. Mix 2 to 3 teaspoons (10g) of Chai Latte, Just Relax or Naked Chocolat into hot water and your choice of milk, or shake them over ice. Stir 1.5 tablespoons (14g) of protein broth into 250ml of boiling water and let it sit for a minute. For more ideas, browse Teresa's drink recipes.

Functional drinks FAQs

What are functional drinks?

Functional drinks are beverages made with an ingredient added for a purpose beyond taste and hydration, such as protein, collagen, probiotics, electrolytes or botanicals. They include ready-to-drink cans as well as powders you mix at home, like The Healthy Chef range.

What are some examples of functional beverages?

Common examples include kombucha, prebiotic sodas, protein drinks, electrolyte drinks, matcha, collagen coffee and botanical teas. Our range covers matcha, collagen coffee, chai, hot chocolate and plant-based protein broths.

Are functional drinks healthy?

It depends on what's in them. Check the amount of the functional ingredient per serve, the sugar and sweeteners, and the caffeine. Our drinks are free from gluten and dairy, and are designed to be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.

Which functional drinks are caffeine-free?

Chai Latte is made with naturally caffeine-free rooibos, and Golden and Harvest Protein Broths are caffeine-free. Naked Chocolat Dark contains only a trace (0.2g per 100g), and Just Relax Hot Chocolate contains a small amount of natural caffeine from cocoa.

How much caffeine is in matcha?

Our Matcha Tea contains about 70mg of caffeine per teaspoon, roughly half a regular black coffee. Collagen Coffee contains 60mg per serve.

Are there functional drinks without refined sugar in Australia?

Yes. Just Relax Hot Chocolate, Chai Latte and Naked Chocolat Dark contain no refined sugar. Just Relax and Chai Latte are sweetened with monk fruit (and Manuka honey in the chai), and Naked Chocolat Dark has no added sugar. Matcha Tea is pure, unsweetened matcha.

Are your functional drinks vegan?

Matcha Tea, Naked Chocolat Dark, Just Relax Hot Chocolate and both protein broths are plant-based. Collagen Coffee contains grass fed bovine collagen, and Chai Latte contains Manuka honey, so neither is vegan.

Who shouldn't have these drinks?

Just Relax Hot Chocolate and Chai Latte are not suitable for children under 15 or during pregnancy. Naked Chocolat Dark contains maca, so check with your healthcare practitioner if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Matcha Tea and Collagen Coffee contain caffeine. If you're unsure, check the label and speak with your health professional.

Can I drink them iced?

Yes. Matcha, Collagen Coffee, Chai Latte, Just Relax and Naked Chocolat can all be served over ice or blended into smoothies. The protein broths are made to be enjoyed hot.
